Su origen proviene de los años 20 y de los denominados “Haut à courroies” ( traducido “con correas por encima”). Eran de gran tamaño y estaban destinados para llevar los accesorios de los jinetes y de sus caballos.
En la década de los años 30, Robert Dumas de la casa Hermès lo adaptaría para su uso diario reduciendo el tamaño y con una estética muy especial para la época. Entonces los clutchs eran los bolsos más populares, de los que ya os hablé en una publicación anterior.
Su existencia fue discreta hasta que en 1956 apareció en la prensa del brazo de Grace Kelly, la actriz de Hollywood convertida en princesa. Sus fotografías publicadas en una revista dieron la vuelta al mundo.
Más tarde la princesa usaría la versión más grande del bolso en cocodrilo para disimular su incipiente embarazo. Desde ese momento fue conocido como Kelly, en honor a la princesa. Y es que estas imágenes ocultando su embarazo fueron tan movidas y se popularizaron de tal forma que Hermès no tuvo más remedio que llamarlo así.
El bolso Kelly está hecho a mano utilizando técnicas tradicionales que se aplicaban a las sillas de montar. Es de forma trapezoidal y con una base rígida apoyada en cuatro patitas de metal. Su detalle más distintivo son las cintas donde se encuentra el cierre metálico central (normalmente de oro blanco o amarillo), el candado y la Clochette –la pieza de cuero que protege la llave– que cuelga del asa perfectamente tallada. En total se necesitan unas 20 horas de trabajo de un único artesano que ensambla y cose las 36 piezas de cuero de que consta, mediante 680 puntadas y 16 pequeños remaches.
Existen distintas variaciones de bolso. Actualmente hay ocho tamaños que abarcan desde el Kelly 50 (de 50 centímetros de ancho), el Kelly mini-mini (con unos escuetos 15 centímetros), el Kellyado (la versión mochila para las más jóvenes) o el Shoulder Kelly (con un asa larga). también se puede elegir en distintos materiales como cocodrilo, lagarto, piel de becerro, avestruz, distintos tipos de cuero e infinidad de colores. Todos ellos ofrecen hasta más de 200 posibles combinaciones, además de la posibilidad de personalización que es atendida por los talleres de la marca.
Audrey Hepburn, Marlene Dietrich, Ingrid Bergman y Catherine Deneuve, que se lo autoregaló con su primer sueldo como actriz, fueron algunas de sus más célebres portadoras en sus inicios. Hoy en día sigue siendo un icono usado tanto por celebridades como por aquellas que se pueden permitir sus altos precios. Es definitivamente un bolso para la historia.

They offer up more than 200 possible combinations, plus the possibility of customization that it is serviced by the workshops of the brand.
