Let’s talk today about fabrics and let’s start to make a small textile glossary to help you to know how the most common are named and how we can use them if we are in love on crafts . The first one you have seen it in towels , tablecloths or details of shirts and dresses : the Aida cloth.

Aida cloth , also called Panama cloth , is the simplest basic quality for cross stitch embroidery. It was invented by Zweigart & Sawitski over 100 years ago and is generally made from 100% cotton. It is the perfect fabric for the new stitcher as they can see the holes in the material and the squares are easier to count than on linen. Originally his name was Eida , but their pronunciation changed to the similar Aida after the premiere of Verdi ‘s opera , taking advantage of its publicity .

The size of the cross depend on the number of passes (number of threads per inch ) having on the fabric . You can buy cloths with different numbers of passes (also known as density or count) , but the most used ranges are from 7 to 22. For example , count 11 means 11 frames per inch or 2.54 cm ( 4,35 stitches per cm ) .

One future day I will publish a post about the base stitches on cross stitch embroidery, although some of you probably already know how to make it, don’t you?
