Block printing is one of the oldest techniques for textile printing. Widely used throughout East Asia, originating in China in antiquity as a method of printing on textiles and paper.

This print technique has a long history. There are many different techniques, but essentially all are based on carving a material with a relief pattern, cover it with ink and transfer it to fabric or paper. The carvings can be made in wood, linoleum or rubber. First seals are carefully prepared with a relief pattern in the material chosen. For printing in various colors different blocks are used, it means, one for color, playing matching drawings or sometimes even overlapping them, producing different shades of color with the same impression.

The blocks are carved by hand, so the detail, definition and fineness depend on the hand of the craftsmen. In wooden blocks sometimes are included pieces in brass or copper to refine certain lines.

The first step is to prepare the design. It is important to reverse the image or text during the stamp carving, as the printed image will be the reverse of what is on the block.

The next step is to carve the design, always carving away the parts to be non printed, as the ink will be applied to the raised surfaces to print the design. Once ready the block, there is no more than impregnate ink and press it on paper or fabric to be printed.

It may seem as manual and traditional process as extinct, but nothing is further from reality. Block printing is one of the most common techniques even today in India , for accessories, clothing and home textiles .

In my business travels to India I never lack a visit to Good Earth, a wonderful chain of home furnishing stores and traditional Indian clothing with a fresh and modern touch. All its textile are hand printed in Jaipur workshops using this technique. They have online store with shipments to Europe, so you can visit their website and fall in love with their products without any problem to get them. I’m posting a video about the development of one of their collections where you will see the entire process of block printing. It’s delightful.
