Aprovechando que seguimos en Navidad, empezaré el año con la primera publicación de una de las nuevas series temáticas del blog : los colores. Hoy por supuesto el rojo de la Navidad, el rojo del traje de Papa Noel.

La leyenda dice que la popularización de Santa Claus se produjo en 1931, cuando Coca-Cola incorporó su figura a su campaña publicitaria de Navidad y el artista Haddon Sundblom dio con la imagen de Papá Noel que se ha convertido en su estereotipo, con su gorro rojo y su barba blanca. Para muchos esta es la verdadera historia, para otros, una leyenda urbana.

Si es cierto que Sundblom dibujó un Santa Claus barbudo y de rojo para los anuncios navideños del refresco, pero imágenes similares ya existían entonces y Santas vestidos de rojo convivían con otros vestidos de blanco , de verde… De hecho, hay campañas publicitarias muy anteriores que ya usaban una imagen similar. Por ejemplo, estas portadas de la revista Puck de 1902 y 1905.

Pero, lo que también es cierto es que desde la campaña de Coca Cola de los años 30 y posteriores, el traje rojo se universalizó y convirtió en el atuendo “oficial” de Santa Claus y de la Navidad, y la barba blanca y el aspecto bonachón se quedaron para siempre como rasgos propios del personaje. Hasta entonces su aspecto y su vestimenta variaban constantemente.

Sundblom se inspiraría en el poema «A Visit From St. Nicholas» de Clement Clark Moore para plasmar la parte entrañable y cálida de la imagen, pero sus rasgos físicos los sacaría de su amigo Lou Prentiss. Cuando éste falleció, él mismo se usó como modelo y lo estuvo dibujando hasta los años sesenta.

Sea o no sea una creación propia, para mí Cocacola es quien ha sabido encajar mejor sus campañas de publicidad con Papa Noel, nos sólo por imagen sino por su espíritu.
