En mi último viaje de trabajo a Portugal, aproveché el fin de semana para conocer Oporto. Llevo años visitando regularmente sus fábricas de confección y nunca había tenido la oportunidad de quedarme unos días y pasear por el centro antiguo. La Rivera, el puente de Luis I, las bodegas …pero sobre todo, la librería Lello me impresionó especialmente.

Librería familiar, fue fundada en 1906 por los hermanos Lello, hijos de un propietario rural de Fontes. José Lello, hombre de cultura y amante de la lectura y de los libros, se establece en Oporto, abriendo su primera librería y editorial en 1881 con su cuñado. Tras el fallecimiento de éste, funda una sociedad con su hermano Antonio, abriendo años más tarde el establecimiento en su dirección actual en la Rua das Carmelitas.
La fachada neogótica del edificio es ya impresionante, con su gran ventanal y las figuras pintadas que la flanquean, pero lo que la ha hecho mundialmente famosa es su interior, con una sorprendente escalera de madera labrada y escalones rojo carmín. Por ella se accede a la planta superior, con sus no menos increíbles pasamanos de madera y decoración Art Decó de los estantes, paredes y techo.
La escritora J. K. Rowling se inspiró en Oporto para escribir su saga sobre Harry Potter. Sentada en las mesas del precioso Café Majestic, dio forma a varios de los textos y, cuando visitó la librería se quedó tan fascinada que no dudó en convertirla en la biblioteca de Hogwarts.
Desde que más tarde se rodaron varias escenas de las películas de Harry Potter en el establecimiento las hordas de turistas son difíciles de manejar, haciendo cola en la puerta para entrar. Debido a esta masiva demanda de visitas, han establecido un pago de 3 euros por la entrada, descontable de la compra de cualquier libro. No olvidemos que sigue siendo una librería, aunque el local y sus famosas escaleras la mantengan en la lista de las librerías más bonitas del mundo.
In my last business trip to Portugal, I took the weekend free to meet Porto. I regularly visiting their garment factories since years and I never had the chance to stay a few days and walk around the old center area. Rivera promenade, Luis I Bridge, wineries … but above all, Lello bookshop impressed me specially.
Family library, it was founded in 1906 by Lello brothers, sons of a landowner of Fontes. Jose Lello, man of culture and a lover of reading and books, setting in Porto and he opened his first bookstore and publishing company in 1881 with his brother in law. After the death of him, he founded a partnership with his brother Antonio, and years later opened the establishment in its current address at Carmelitas street.
The neo-Gothic facade of the building is impressive, with its large windows and painted figures that flank it, but what it has become world famous is its interior, with a carved wooden staircase and red lipstick steps. Through it you can access the top floor, with no less amazing wooden railings and decorative Art Deco shelves, walls and ceiling.
Author JK Rowling was inspired by Oporto city when writing his saga of Harry Potter. Sitting at the tables in the beautiful Café Majestic, he shaped several of the texts and, when he visited the bookstore was so fascinated that she did not hesitate to make it the Hogwarts library.
