Las primeras chaquetas de estilo Harrington fueron creadas por la compañía británica Baracuta, hacia el 1930. Denominada como G9, fue usada originariamente por jugadores de golf por su tejido resistente al agua. No se popularizaría hasta los años 50, cuando Elvis Presley vistió la G9 en su película “King Creole”.

Su nombre proviene del personaje de una serie de televisión llamado Rodney Harrington que interpretaba Ryan O’Neal en la década de 1960 en Peyton Place, de máxima audiencia por aquellos años. Otras muchas estrellas usaron tanto en su vida personal como en sus películas la que ya empezaba a ser icónica cazadora, especialmente Steve Mcqueen y Frank Sinatra.

En los años 70 y en el Reino Unido es adoptada por los mods, skinheads y scooterboys. Dentro de esas subculturas , la Harrington se usaba a menudo con polos Fred Perry o camisas Ben Sherman.

Desde entonces, todos, desde The Clash a Daniel Craig como 007 (cuyo Harrington está hecha por Tom Ford) han mostrado la versatilidad de la silueta.

Few jackets have been wide-reaching popularity as Baracuta’s Harrington. Lightweight waist-length jacket, it is usually made of cotton, polyester or wool, with large side pockets with flap, elastic cuffs and hem, double button collar and check-patterned lining.

The first Harrington-style jackets were created by the British company Baracuta towards 1930. Named G9, it was originally beloved by golfers, chiefly for its water-resistant fabric and ‘umbrella’ back flap. Elvis Presley popularized the Baracuta G9 when he wore it in his 1958 movie King Creole.

Its nickname Harrington comes from a television serie, because it was worn by the character Rodney Harrington (played by Ryan O’Neal) in the 1960s prime time soap opera Peyton Place.

Since then, and especially in the 70s and in the United Kingdom it is adopted by the mods, skinheads and scooter boys. Within those subcultures, Harringtons are often worn with Fred Perry polos or Ben Sherman shirts. As well celebrities praised his style, like Frank Sinatra and Steve McQueen.
