He visitado tanto y tan frecuentemente la ciudad de Hong Kong por trabajo que a pesar de ser un lugar tan lejano y distinto a España yo lo siento un poco hogar. He visto cambiar la ciudad desde que era británica a la actual china, construir rascacielos, crecer lineas de metro, renovar calles, y he vivido grandes momentos con mis amigos de allí, buenos amigos.
Para los que no la conocéis, la ciudad de Hong kong consta de una parte continental y varias islas. La más grande es la que le da nombre a la ciudad, la isla de Hong Kong, y es donde se erigen los más conocidos rascacielos. Su “sky line” es para mí el más impactante del mundo, por su vista espectacular desde la bahía del continente y por los juegos de luces de los edificios.

No queda casi nada de su herencia colonial y casi todos los edificios son de nueva construcción Los pocos que se conservan se han convertido en edificios gubernamentales o en centros comerciales. No por ello la cuidad ha perdido su encanto, nada de eso. Una vez que dejas atrás las anchas avenidas y las zonas comerciales, te puedes adentrar en callejuelas con encantadoras tiendas locales, bares de diseño, pequeños restaurantes de comida internacional y anticuarios.
En el área de “Mid-levels” y en una de esas pequeñas calles está el Man Mo Temple. Es un pequeño templo situado en la calle Hollywood y el más antiguo de la ciudad, construido en 1847. Dedicado al dios de las Letras ( Man) y al dios de la guerra ( Mo), es visitado por los estudiantes que piden ayuda con sus exámenes, y por los devotos que piden ayuda en conflictos.
El templo acoge muchas visitas, especialmente por sus impresionantes espirales de incienso encendidas como ofrenda, y sus faroles votivos.
Es un remanso de paz en contraste con el frenético y ruidoso ritmo del cercano barrio financiero. No soy persona religiosa pero este lugar me da energía. Si visitas Hong Kong te recomiendo su visita y enciende una espiral para buscar la paz que desees.
I visit so often the city of Hong Kong for business and despite being such far and different place compared with Spain I feel it a little bit as home. I have seen the city changes since it British times to the current Chinese, build skyscrapers, subway lines grow, renovate streets, and I have lived great moments with my hongkoniers friends, good friends.
For those who did’n still visit the city, Hong Kong consists on a mainland area and several islands. The largest one gives its name to the city, Hong Kong island, and ii’s where the most famous skyscrapers are erected. Its “sky line” is for me the most impressive in the world, for its spectacular view from the continental bay and the light exhibition over the buildings.
Almost nothing remains from its colonial heritage and most of buildings are newly constructed.The few that still stay have become government buildings or shopping centers. But the city hasn’t lost its charm, nothing like that. Once you leave behind the wide avenues and shopping areas, you can delve into small streets with charming local shops, modern designed bars, little international restaurants and antique shops.
In the area of ”Mid-levels” and in one of those little streets we can find the Man Mo Temple. It is a small temple located in Hollywood road and the oldest in town, built in 1847. Dedicated to the God of Literature (Man) and the God of War (Mo), is visited by students to pray for success in examinations or in their academic or literary endeavors, and by devotees who seek help in conflicts.
The temple hosting many tourist visits, especially for its impressive spiral incense burning as offerings, and their votive lamps. It is a haven of peace in contrast to the noisy and hectic pace of the nearby business district. I’m not a religious person but this place gives me energy. If you visit Hong Kong I recommend you the visit.
