¿Tu llevaste velo?

As I told you last week, the color of wedding dresses is the white and symbolizing purity. The veils has the same meaning and they are an important part of the dress of the bride especially if the wedding is the classic Catholic religious ceremony.

Greeks and  Romans had the habit of wearing a veil to ward off the evil eye, although at that time it was colorful. In fact the word “veil” comes from the Latin root meaning “protection”.

The time to lift the veil has its history. Historically marriages were closed agreements between parents and especially where women had no power of decision. In most cases, the couple were seen for the first time at the ceremony, where the bride’s father discovered her face once finished the ceremony.

Today, the use veil or not is a matter of taste or the kind of bridal dress that the bride choose and it can be replaced with many headdresses and other decorative elements. There are many types of veils and they can be distinguished by their length.

The most traditional is the Cathedral or chapel length veil. They are often used with dresses with tail and its length is at least longer than this, ranging between two and five meters length. They are perfect for religious wedding chapels and churches and their length varies depending mainly of the corridor length and the grandeur of the church.

Something shorter it’s the fingertip length veil. Its name comes because its length does not go beyond the tips of bride fingers with arms extended. They goes well with any outfit, so usually the most used. Only it is not advisable with short dress.

The elbow length veils are as its name suggests up to the elbow. This short veil usually reach the waist is easy to carry but not recommended when the dresses are bulky waist down.

Shoulder length veils are perfect for short or strapless dresses . As its name implies, they reach shoulder height.

Birdcage veils are the shortest length, and they’re usually worn just covering the eyes or extending down to the chin.

A two-tier veil (or double-tier veil) is simply one that has two lengths of veil combined, usually a blusher and a longer veil.
Finally , we have the mantilla, for me one of the nicest. It is usually a circular lace or tulle with lace that is held in place with a comb to frame the face.

My wedding ceremony will be civil and simple and I will wear a short dress, so I’ll better change my veil by a headdress of flowers. Did you wear veil?
