Once again I want to show you the origin of one of the most useful and smarts inventions of the last century, the velcro.

Most people know it as an invention of NASA when in the 60’s the aerospace industry began using it as closure of spacesuits, but actually his invention was years before.

In 1941, the Swiss electrical engineer George de Mistral began to analyze the burrs that clung to his clothes when he got home after a day of hunting. They were so difficult to unfasten from his pants and from the fur of his dog . Watching them closely he discovered they were covered in tiny hooks, which allowed them to grab onto clothes and fur that brushed in passing. He decided to replicate it, inventing the current closure system which is based on two tapes, one with a multitude of filaments with tiny hooks at their ends and another with fiber loops and velvety touch for easy coupling.

Its name VELCRO® comes from the French contraction words “velours” (velvet) and “crochet” (hook).

It took years to find the way to create the hook end on nylon fibers, making a thousand heating tests, but finally got it. The invention was patented in 1955, being so successful, that soon more than 60,000 kilometers of Velcro were manufactured annually.

After being used by NASA, the following practical application was in ski suits and gradually came closer to domestic use until the late 70s when the patent expired and its manufacture was of massified produced.

We can now found it in thousands of different applications in all kinds of sectors. We just have to look more closely at the nature and she will teach us everything we needed.
